Residential systems use a concealed sprinkler head
which is unobtrusive, but effective.
The UL listed orange CPVC piping has water in it at
all times so must be below the insulation as shown at the right.
Sometimes a water supply tank and pump must be
provided to ensure adequate water supply for suppressing a fire.
In any case, each system is tested to
ensure that it meets design and code requirements.
This picture shows a flow test valve in place where a sprinkler head
will be installed.
The blue cover protects the sprinkler head components
during construction. A decorative escutcheon which appears as an
off-white 3 inch diameter disc on the ceiling is installed after the
room is painted. During a fire the escutcheon drops off the
sprinkler head, exposing the sprinkler component. If temperature continues to
increase, the sprinkler opens to spray water on the fire. Only the sprinklers exposed to the intense heat of a fire
will open.
